14.12.2009

SLIEMA, 11th December, 2009 - The Battery Buster Campaign which took place between August and November led to more than five tonnes worth of batteries being collected during the campaign period. This figure was announced today by FIMBank plc President Margrith Lütschg-Emmenegger during an event held to reward the winners of two competitions which were organised as part of this national initative.

This phase of the Battery Buster Campaign, which is managed by WasteServ Malta Ltd and sponsored and supported by FIMBank plc, focused on supermarkets, shopping complexes and other centrally-located retail outlets in Malta and Gozo. Throughout this campaign, consumers were encouraged to dispose of their used batteries in an environmentally sustainable manner by depositing them in special bins placed in participating outlets, while at the same time taking part in a competition.

Commenting on the conclusion of this phase of the Battery Buster Campaign, Ms Lütschg-Emmenegger stated that the Bank’s support for this project was part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme: “CSR is about the social obligations to all stakeholders and contributing to the community for a better quality of life. As a Malta-based banking institution, our involvement in this environmental campaign has been a very fulfilling experience, one which underscores the Bank’s strong connection with Malta”. FIMBank’s President proceeded to thank all the retail outlets which participated in the campaign, adding that their role was fundamental to its success.

On behalf of WasteServ Malta Ltd, company Chairman, Perit Ben Farrugia stated that the competition, which was an essential part of this campaign, should only be seen as a catalyst to make us more aware of our environmental responsibility to leave an environment in a better shape than the one we found. It should instil in us an urge not only to persist but furthermore intensify our efforts to dispose of and separate our waste to salvage, and protect the environment we all live in. WasteServ’s Chairman also thanked FIMbank p.l.c. for sponsoring and supporting Wasteserv through the setting up of this campaign and for their ongoing dedication. Their practical ways of assisting WasteServ were appreciated and were instrumental for the success of both phases of the campaign.

The 45 outlets which installed Battery Buster Bins on their premises as part of this campaign included Agenda Bookshops, Arkadia Foodstores (Gozo and Portomaso), Chain Supermarket, Carters Supermarket, GS Superstore, JB Stores, Peacocks, Pedigree Toyshops, Piazza Italia, Scan Computers, Scotts Supermarkets, Shoppers Discount Supermarket, Shopwise Discount Store, Smart Supermarket, things*, The Duke and Tigrija Palazz.

The competition’s top prize, a 32” TFT flat screen TV, went to Mr Ivan Delia, while Mrs Adelina Sultana, who placed second, received a Notebook. The prize for third place, a Digital Camcorder, went to Ms Josette Fabri.

During the same event, the winners of a battery disposal awareness competition organised by FIMBank plc and WasteServ, in conjunction with the educational magazine Saghtar, each received an iPod Nano.
